Hawaii sees planting coconut trees as a way of improving food security and cultural ties

Honolulu Civil Beat – The coconut tree is not only a food source for Hawaiian villages but its cultivation is still a part of their everyday lifestyle. Though you may be shocked to find out that coconut is no longer a staple in Hawaii’s diet.
With a grant from the University of Hawaii’s Office of Sustainability in 2020, the Uluniu Project now has more than 400 coconut seedlings in their nursery that they plan on distributing to community members as a way for them to grow their own food.
As Hawaii struggles with food insecurity, however, food sustainability can be achieved through native plants like the coconut.
